Gallagher eShepherd Virtual FencingSubheadline: Control Your Cattle — Without the Wire

Gallagher's eShepherd is a GPS-enabled virtual fencing system for cattle that uses solar-powered neckbands and a simple app on your desktop or mobile device to create invisible fences — no moving of physical wire required. With eShepherd, you can draw digital fence lines on a map, adding landmarks, water sources, and physical fences, then schedule or move virtual paddocks in real-time right from your phone or computer. Neckband collars let cattle graze freely, and when they approach a boundary, they receive a sound alert — and a mild pulse if the boundary is breached. Built by Gallagher, a company with 85+ years of pioneering agritech innovation, eShepherd is the next generation of fencing.

How It Works

Getting started with eShepherd is simpler than you might think. Each animal is fitted with a lightweight, solar-powered GPS collar that keeps itself charged in the field and stays linked to your herd records through the animal's EID tag — no manual tracking required. Depending on where your operation is located, you can choose between a direct-to-cellular collar for ranches with basic network coverage, or a base station setup that keeps the system running reliably even in remote, low-signal areas. Once your herd is collared, you log into the eShepherd app on your phone or computer and draw your grazing boundaries directly on a map. Paddock moves can be planned days in advance and set to happen automatically on a schedule, so your cattle shift to fresh grass without you driving out to move a single post. The collars guide cattle away from boundaries using a progressive audio warning, and animals adapt to the system quickly — meaning fewer corrections over time and a calmer, more settled herd. All the while, you can check in on your cattle's location and movement in near real-time, giving you full visibility across country that would otherwise take hours to ride.

Perfect for:

eShepherd is an ideal solution for producers who want to rotational graze more precisely without the time and cost of moving physical infrastructure. It works exceptionally well on leased or rented land where permanent fencing isn't an option, and on rugged terrain where traditional fencing is either impractical or too expensive to justify. It's also a powerful tool for keeping cattle out of sensitive environmental areas — whether that's a creek bank, a recovering burn zone, or a habitat that needs protection without a physical barrier.

eShepherd Virtual Fencing FAQs

Most cattle learn within days to a few weeks.

GPS and network coverage are required for system performance.

For areas with cell coverage: Direct-to-Cellular Neckbands

These use built-in cellular connectivity in each neckband to talk to the eShepherd cloud platform. They work where there’s at least basic cell signal (even 1–2 bars).

Even if cell signal is weak or absent, the LoRa base station option lets neckbands receive boundary updates and send status without each device depending on its own cellular connection, making eShepherd usable in more remote conditions.

Yes. You can adjust grazing areas from your device without moving physical fences.

Yes. eShepherd has been tested on bulls and can be used with a longer neck chain designed to fit them properly.
